The Cardano Foundation’s X account was hacked by an unknown party on Sunday, leading to a fake announcement about the Solana token and later a false statement about an SEC lawsuit.
The Cardano Foundation confirmed the hack in a statement and said it would make an announcement on the foundation’s LinkedIn page to restore access.
The account was first used to publish a post claiming to launch a token called $ADASOL, a Solana-based token that claimed to be “Cardano reimagined for the speed and innovation of Solana.”
Unlike some scam attempts, this post was written relatively complexly, with a total of thirteen points explaining the purpose of the token and linking to real resources, such as the Cardano Foundation's website and a recent podcast episode discussing the token.
According to data from DexScreener, traders seemed to realize that this fake token was a scam after trading volume exceeded $500,000.
The post was deleted within an hour of publication, at which point the account posted another false notice claiming that the Cardano community had received a lawsuit notice from the SEC. 'In light of this unexpected legal action, we made the difficult decision to immediately cease all support for the $ADA token to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements,' the false notice stated.
The reply feature of the post has been disabled, and it had over 256,000 views on X at the time of publication, although many quoted tweets warned that the account had been compromised.
When a Cardano fan asked whether the notice was real, a team leader from the Cardano Foundation replied, 'Confirmed, we are addressing it.' The Cardano community's X account then clarified, 'The Cardano Foundation's X account @Cardano_CF has been compromised. Please disregard any posts from this account while we address the matter.'
The Cardano Foundation stated in a statement that the team is 'actively restoring security' and noted that confirmation of restored access will be posted on its LinkedIn page. 'The leak of this X account does not indicate that other platforms or systems have been affected,' the statement added.
