Layer1 blockchain project Sonic Labs (formerly Fantom) announced that the Sonic mainnet has generated its first block, marking the successful completion of the 'Genesis' phase, and it is expected to officially launch soon.
Sonic Labs just launched the upgraded testnet 'Blaze' a few days ago. Blaze, as an EVM-compatible testnet, has made significant breakthroughs in performance. According to an official statement released at the end of November, the testnet achieved an average block generation time of 1.17 seconds across the first batch of over 220,000 blocks, and the final confirmation time for transactions was shortened to just 0.85 seconds.
Sonic Labs has a grand vision, aiming to achieve 'sub-second transaction confirmation' and set a new standard: processing 10,000 transactions per second, with confirmation times compressed to within 1 second, truly challenging the limits of high-performance blockchains.
The origins of this project can be traced back to Fantom's Opera blockchain—since its launch at the end of 2019, the platform has built a solid foundation. Sonic Labs has currently raised $10 million in funding, with notable investors including Stani Kulechov, Robert Leshner, Michael Egorov, and Tarun Chitra, while heavyweight figure Andre Cronje serves as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
The team previously pointed out that the mainnet would be launched between late November and early December, and current progress indicates that this goal is on track.
On the other hand, Sonic Labs also stated that it has completed the snapshot for the S token airdrop allocation. After the mainnet launch, Sonic's native token will use the code name $S and will be able to seamlessly exchange 1:1 with Fantom's existing FTM token.
In addition, the Sonic network will launch an Ethereum cross-chain bridge called Sonic Gateway, which not only allows the platform to integrate with Ethereum's vast user base and liquidity but also retains its own high performance and low-cost characteristics. Meanwhile, the network has designed a shared sequencer that can simultaneously generate and protect blocks of multiple rollups, significantly enhancing its future scalability.
