Today, I signed a pardon, pardoning my son Hunter.
From the day I took office, I promised not to interfere with the decisions of the Department of Justice, and I have kept that promise, even while seeing my son suffer from selective and unfair prosecution, I have remained restrained.

The charges he faces are entirely because a few political opponents in Congress pushed these cases to attack me and oppose my election. Subsequently, the plea agreement carefully negotiated by the Department of Justice collapsed in court, while some of my political opponents claimed it was they who applied political pressure to this process. If the plea agreement had gone into effect, it would have been a fair and reasonable resolution to Hunter's case.
Anyone who rationally examines Hunter's case will conclude: Hunter is targeted solely because he is my son—and that is wrong.
Over the years, some have tried to destroy Hunter—he has remained sober for five and a half years even in the face of relentless attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to destroy Hunter, they are also trying to destroy me— and there is no reason to believe that this will stop here. Enough is enough.
Throughout my career, I have always followed a simple principle: to tell the American people the truth. They will be fair. The truth is: I believe in the justice system, but on this issue, I also see the naked politics that have polluted this process, leading to injustice. After reflecting on this over the weekend, I decided to no longer delay making this decision.
I hope the American people can understand why a father and a president would make such a decision.
