Intro
Information and general data
Announced in July 2014 by Brock Pierce, Reeve Collins, and Craig Sellars as Realcoin, Tether (USDT) is the most popular and liquid stablecoin in the cryptocurrency ecosystem. It is a token that was first issued on the Bitcoin blockchain using the Omni Layer platform; however, it has since been launched as a token on other blockchains (Ethereum, Tron, EOS, and Algorand). Each token represents a claim (redeemable) of one USD fiat held by Tether (the company).
Considering that the fiat reserves backing the tokens are held in the traditional banking system, it can be challenging to maintain transparency regarding the value of those reserves. Tether attempts to provide transparency about the total reserve (not the partial reserve) by issuing accountant statements that provide visibility into the reserve bank accounts, which are then compared to the public token issuances across different blockchains. Milestones
July 2014: Pierce, Collins, and Sellars announce Realcoin. October 6, 2014: First tokens issued on the Bitcoin blockchain via Omni Layer. November 20, 2014: Renamed to “Tether.” January 2015: Bitfinex enables trading of USDT.
