AI-generated images are being used to create thousands of fake social media profiles that spread misinformation online. According to a study by Platform X (formerly Twitter), more than 7,700 fake accounts with AI-generated images were identified out of an initial sample of around 15 million accounts.

The fake profiles were found to be spreading conspiracy theories and political propaganda, and were more likely to have fewer followers and follow fewer accounts than real profiles. The researchers believe that these fake accounts were created to spread targeted disinformation and political propaganda.

In the future, researchers plan to use new AI models to identify potentially fake profiles at an even higher rate.
