Binance founder Changpeng Zhao’s attendance at Binance Blockchain Week in Dubai has generated widespread interest, marking his first public speaking engagement since completing a four-month prison sentence.
Despite the challenges he has faced, including a $50 million fine and stepping down as CEO, Changpeng Zhao still wields significant influence in the crypto world. He retains a significant ownership stake in Binance, ensuring he continues to guide the company’s direction. His experience is expected to add a new chapter to his career, and could lead to a more cautious approach to regulatory issues.
Changpeng Zhao’s presence sparked a lively discussion about the future of blockchain and Web 3.0, with speakers expressing diverse opinions on the impact his return will have on the industry. While some see his return as a boost for Binance, others argue that there is a need for greater transparency and accountability in the cryptocurrency sector.

Speaking about his prison experience, Changping Zhao commented: ‘Despite the hardships I faced, this experience was an opportunity for reflection and contemplation. I learned the importance of human relationships, and how time can be used for self-improvement. These lessons will help me lead Binance towards a brighter future.’
When asked about the fairness of his imprisonment, Changping Zhao declined to comment directly due to legal restrictions. However, he pointed to the TD Bank case as an example of the double standards that can apply to institutions and individuals in the financial industry. While TD Bank admitted to serious violations of anti-money laundering laws, executives were not held individually accountable. This raises questions about the fairness of the application of the laws to different parties.
These remarks underscore Changpeng Zhao’s desire to see a fairer and more transparent regulatory environment in the cryptocurrency sector. He is expected to use this experience as a catalyst to push a reform agenda in the sector.
CZ noted that he was the only person to receive a prison sentence for failing to comply with anti-money laundering laws under these circumstances, adding: ‘I was supposed to be a victim of a systemic failure, not a criminal. Despite this, I learned valuable lessons during this difficult period.’
He humorously shared his experience of being the ‘poorest’ prisoner, saying: “When I walked in, everyone had $200 in their accounts, and I could only put $50 in. I was advised to put $50 in so I wouldn’t appear too rich.” Despite these difficult circumstances, she managed to maintain a sense of humor, and used this time to reflect on the future of Binance.
Comparing his experience to the TD Bank case, CZ said: “While I served time in prison for alleged non-compliance, TD Bank executives who were involved in much larger violations were not punished in the same way. This underscores the double standard in enforcement, and I am determined to work for justice and equity in the cryptocurrency sector.”
Discussing his future, CZ noted that he is looking forward to a new role as a mentor and investor in the blockchain and AI space. “Despite the challenges I have faced, I believe I still have a lot to offer the space. I have learned valuable lessons during this time, and I am excited to apply them to my new ventures,” he said.
CZ stressed that the charges against him did not relate to any form of fraud, and that investors were not harmed by his actions. He said: “The sentence I received was for regulatory violations, and this does not prevent me from working in the crypto space. I am committed to supporting and developing this sector.”
As for his future, CZ is focused on his Giggle Academy project, which aims to provide high-quality and affordable education to all. “We are using the latest technologies in artificial intelligence to develop an innovative educational platform, but we are facing some challenges in generating visual content. However, we are confident that we can overcome these challenges and achieve our goal of empowering millions of people around the world,” he said.
