According to Dune Analytics, the number of addresses claiming the GRASS token airdrop surged to over 1.5 million, marking the largest airdrop on Solana to date - at least in terms of the number of addresses holding the token.

When this token launched on Monday, it contributed to an outage issue for the Phantom wallet, the largest wallet on Solana. More than 2.8 million wallets were eligible to receive the GRASS token - a new governance token for the Solana-based DePin project - as they connected in time. However, about 5 million addresses will have another chance to claim the token, according to information from Andrej Radonjic, CEO of Wynd Labs, one of the core collaborators of Grass.

The previous record for the largest airdrop on Solana was held by Jupiter, with 639,000 claims. However, users can own multiple blockchain addresses and different wallets, so GRASS should not be seen as the token with the widest distribution in terms of the number of holders.

What is GRASS?

GRASS is a cryptocurrency project aimed at collecting and verifying data to train artificial intelligence (AI) bots. Millions of users have downloaded the browser extension and mobile app to collect and clean website data, and they are rewarded with GRASS tokens.

The GRASS token will also be used to stake into the protocol to facilitate 'web traffic' across the network and pay for bandwidth.

In Epoch 1 of the GRASS airdrop 'season', the protocol released 100 million GRASS (10% of the total supply) to early node runners and community members, with 90% awarded to those who earned more than 500 Grass Points by using the network.

Data from CryptoRank shows that the unlocking process for GRASS tokens will extend until 2028. From now until October 28, 2025, 0.01% of the total supply, equivalent to 146,200 GRASS, will be unlocked daily, potentially creating long-term selling pressure on the GRASS price, which is currently trading below $1.

Community Reaction

Not everyone is satisfied with this airdrop. Many in the industry believe that Wynd's airdrop strategy inadvertently attracted bot operators, resulting in a large number of tokens being distributed to farmers instead of actual participants in the platform. This could diminish the airdrop's value for real users, as it skews distribution towards those with automated systems rather than loyal community members.

Additionally, some criticize the way bandwidth is utilized through the extension, likening it to malware. In response, Radonjic asserted that Grass underwent a rigorous certification process with AppEsteem, a leading cybersecurity company, to ensure ethical operations.
