Bitstamp, a cryptocurrency exchange, has received a MiFID MTF license from the Securities Market Agency of Slovenia. This license allows Bitstamp to offer more complex products, including cryptocurrency derivatives, to both institutional and retail investors.

The Securities Market Agency of Slovenia has granted Bitstamp a Multilateral Trading Facility (MTF) license under the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID), allowing this cryptocurrency trading platform to offer more sophisticated products to institutional and retail customers. This license also greenlights Bitstamp to offer cryptocurrency derivatives, including perpetual swaps.

According to a statement, the approval from the Securities Market Agency allows investors to access cryptocurrencies without needing to directly hold this asset. Investors will also use Bitstamp's "high-efficiency spot exchange" when trading. Commenting on Bitstamp receiving the license, Jean-Baptiste Graftieaux, Global CEO of Bitstamp, stated:

“We are extremely proud to be one of the first cryptocurrency exchanges to be granted a MiFID MTF license. This is not only a testament to our safety, security, reliability, and compliance but also a symbol of the growing maturity of the entire industry.
With this license, Bitstamp will be able to offer derivative products to investors, helping to create a trading ecosystem that supports a variety of trading and investment strategies, including aiding institutional investors in achieving higher capital efficiencies.”

Slovenia's MTF license allows companies to operate a multilateral trading facility where multiple parties can trade financial instruments, including cryptocurrencies. Bitstamp is one of the first cryptocurrency exchanges to receive this license, enabling investors to trade EU-regulated cryptocurrency derivative products.

MiFID is the framework of the European Union that regulates investment services in the euro area. This framework includes stocks, securities, and derivatives, and also applies to trading platforms, investment managers, and investment banks. According to Bitstamp, obtaining this license demonstrates the strength of the cryptocurrency exchange in areas such as anti-money laundering controls and investor protection.
