What to expect in the crypto space this week: Scroll enters the picture

Scroll’s token launch sparked eager anticipation among some, while others were disappointed by the token distribution.

  • Traders are expected to focus heavily on Scroll next week as Layer-2 network Scroll launches an airdrop of its native SCR token.

  • After major crypto assets like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL) experienced a major rally, memecoins could also see a comeback.

  • Gaming company Moonveil and communications platform Huddle01 will also hold token sales.

As crypto markets reenter a frenzy after rallying to three-month highs, multiple investors are eyeing Scroll, the much-anticipated layer-2 network set to release its native governance token next week.

Scroll, which has a total value locked (TVL) of around $1 billion, has been running a points farm since September 2023. Users who have actively used the protocol since then have accumulated “tokens,” which can be redeemed for Scroll tokens on October 22.

However, the distribution of the tokens has disappointed users, who have complained that only 7% of the supply has been allocated for airdrops next week, while Binance Launchpool users will receive 5.5% of the supply.

This week, X user Andrew 10 GWEI revealed that the Scroll founder’s wallet had over 1 million tokens, and several wallets associated with Scroll had bloated balances, sparking continued suspicions. People compared it to ZKsync, which was criticized for its head token distribution.

Aside from the teething issues with early token economics, Scroll plans to be “the tortoise that wins the ethereum scaling race,” with its Layer-2 network focused on efficiency, security, and cost-effectiveness, as a CoinDesk report from April 2023 noted.

Scroll was chosen by Donald Trump-affiliated project World Liberty Financial as its preferred layer-2 blockchain, which it plans to deploy alongside its debut on ethereum. (Though CoinDesk reported this week that initial demand for the project’s new tokens has been minuscule relative to the total amount allocated in the public sale, currently at $13 million, and not even close to the reserves needed to cover the $30 million in expenses.)

Scroll has also been selected by restaking firm Ether.fi for its upcoming cash card.

The company has raised a total of $83 million in three rounds of funding from investors including Polychain Capital and Bain Capital Ventures.

Other highlights

Also coming next week, according to Icodrops, is Moonveil, a blockchain gaming company that has raised $11 million in two funding rounds and plans to raise further funds through a token offering on October 22.

The company plans to launch a gaming-focused Layer-2 blockchain and will sell 200 million tokens in total.

With Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL) all having surged this week, hundreds of memecoins are expected to hit the market over the weekend as investors speculate whether another boom will follow. Traders often diversify profits into more speculative bets after a major asset rebounds.

BitMEX founder Arthur Hayes tweeted about GOAT, a token apparently launched solely through artificial intelligence.

Worth mentioning is Huddle01, a messaging platform backed by Stani Kulechov and LongHash Ventures. It will host a node sale round on October 29.
