The ICP Chain Fusion Bitcoin Education Edition was a four-week, eight-session event hosted by industry experts who shared knowledge on how to integrate Bitcoin with the Internet Computer as a Layer 2 solution, and hundreds of people joined us to gain the skills needed for the upcoming ICP Chain Fusion Hackathon Bitcoin Edition!

👉 If you want to watch the full course, head over to đŸ“ș YouTube , or, for a quick summary, keep reading to see the topics we explored throughout the series.

1. Introduction to ICP and Chain Fusion

We kick off this series with an introduction from Thumbpark, Head of Research and Operations at Encode Club.

ć›Ÿç‰‡

Key Highlights:

  • 🌐 ICP Chain Fusion Series: Learn how ICP acts as a Bitcoin Layer 2, enhancing smart contracts, on-chain computation, and cross-chain communication.

  • 💡 Workshop: Explore crypto technologies like ICP Canisters, Chain Key technology, and build multi-chain applications using the Chain Fusion framework.

  • đŸ’» Real-world applications: Developing DeFi platforms, NFT marketplaces, and decentralized identities using ICP and Bitcoin integration.

  • 🚀 Hackathon Prep: Put your skills to use in upcoming hackathons for a chance to win bounties and create cross-chain solutions.

  • 🔗 Community Engagement: Connect with other developers, expand your Web3 skills, and stay informed about blockchain technology.

2. How to use ICP as Bitcoin L2

The second session was moderated by Moritz Fuller from DFINITY, and this seminar delved into the integration of Bitcoin and ICP.

ć›Ÿç‰‡

Covering key features such as containers, advanced cryptography (e.g. chain key signatures), and the Bitcoin API, the session focused on how developers can build scalable decentralized applications using Bitcoin’s liquidity and ICP’s on-chain computing power.

The conference also explored practical use cases such as multi-chain smart contract wallets and cross-chain DeFi platforms, providing a comprehensive guide for developing Bitcoin-based decentralized applications using ICP.

3. Develop the Ordinals Market

In the third session, we heard from Bob Bodily, Co-founder and CEO of Tonic Labs, who talked about building autonomous marketplaces using ICP and Bitcoin. Bob detailed the company’s journey, focusing on their Bitcoin NFT marketplace, Bionic, which leverages ICP’s functionality as a Bitcoin sidechain.

ć›Ÿç‰‡

The session explored ICP’s use of Bitcoin primitives, such as on-chain Bitcoin light nodes and threshold signatures, allowing direct Bitcoin transactions through ICP smart contracts, and Bob also presented the potential of integrating Bitcoin Ordinals and Runes with ICP for programmable assets, enabling decentralized, efficient cross-chain marketplaces.

The workshop provided a practical overview of developing on ICP, highlighting the interoperability and innovation possibilities built on the Bitcoin blockchain using ICP technology.

4. Developing Runes on ICP

The fourth session was hosted by Julian Sun and Ting Lin from Omnity Network. This session explored the development of runes on ICP and kicked off with Julian introducing the Omnity project (formerly known as Octopus Network), focusing on the project’s evolution in achieving interoperability of Bitcoin assets using ICP.

ć›Ÿç‰‡

Ting then demonstrated Omnity’s cross-chain infrastructure and its functionality with ICP. The presentation covered technical integration, API documentation, and included a demonstration of bridging runes between ICP and Bitcoin. A Q&A session discussed comparisons to technologies such as Osmosis and discussed future plans to support BRC20 tokens.

5. OAMM Pool + Unlocking BTC Liquidity on ICP

Moving into session five, we heard from Marcell Anderson, Marketing Manager from CLP Finance and John Crowley, Head of Marketing from ICLighthouse.

Marcell introduced CLP (Cross-Chain Liquidity Protocol) on ICP, focusing on its features and technical setup. He then explained how CLP works as a stablecoin platform, allowing users to borrow COSD stablecoins using assets such as ICP, Bitcoin and Ethereum as collateral with zero interest.

ć›Ÿç‰‡

The session highlighted CLP’s dual-token model, which encourages user participation through rewards, and Marcel highlighted CLP’s integration with the ICP mainnet and showed a demo detailing the process of minting COSD, depositing assets, and using the liquidation pool.

John demonstrated IC Lighthouse’s DeFi products, highlighting OAMM pools, professional order types, and IC Router for seamless Bitcoin transfers. He discussed plans to expand cross-chain functionality and integrate new assets to enhance the platform’s utility. The Q&A session discussed the development of the protocol and plans to expand functionality.

6. DeFi with Chain Fusion

The session was moderated by Ray Gu, founder of Bitomni, which is focused on implementing Bitcoin-based DeFi applications (BTC-Fi) using Chain Fusion.

ć›Ÿç‰‡

Ray introduced the fundamentals of DeFi, the integration of Bitcoin and DeFi (BTC-Fi), and how Bitomni uses ICP’s Chain Fusion technology to build products such as BitoBridge, which supports cross-chain transactions involving Bitcoin. The seminar also introduced the technical architecture of the Bitomni solution and provided a live demonstration of BitoBridge’s functionality.

7. How to connect more than 30 chains using Chain Fusion

In the seventh class, Jennifer Tran from DFINITY introduced the use of Chain Fusion technology to integrate more than 30 chains, emphasizing its cross-chain transaction capabilities. She emphasized how ICP's infrastructure enables developers to seamlessly manage assets across multiple chains, eliminating the need for multiple wallets or contracts.

ć›Ÿç‰‡

Jennifer also explained technical details such as signature schemes (ECDSA and Schnorr) and demonstrated how to use ICP containers for trustless blockchain interactions, such as managing Bitcoin addresses and querying block data.

8. Chain Fusion as cross-chain infrastructure

We wrap up the series with episode eight, where Xiao Zhang, founder of zCloak Network, presents the use of ICP’s Chain Fusion as a stealth layer – a zero-knowledge proof verification infrastructure designed to enhance trust and privacy in AI and blockchain applications.

ć›Ÿç‰‡

The session covered how Chain Fusion enables reading and writing to public blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, focusing on how to use ZKP technology to achieve secure and efficient cross-chain transactions. He explained the benefits of using ICP infrastructure for ZKP verification, such as cost efficiency and fast processing, and showed a demo of ZKPay, a privacy-preserving payment solution built using a hidden layer on Ethereum.
