Art Blocks Project Introduction

Art Blocks is a platform focused on programmable generation of art NFTs, usually programmed using p5.js (p5.js is a Javascript library with scripts stored on-chain). When a new artwork is minted, a script is called to generate a seed to generate the artwork.

The so-called generative art refers to the creation of all or part of the work through an autonomous system. The artist will output his own work and convey his own artistic concept by intervening in the system. The artist does not directly participate in the creation of the work. The computer runs the algorithm written by the artist to automatically generate works of art that combine subjective ideas and randomness.

Art Blocks is the first truly programmable art generation platform, where content is stored on the Ethereum chain and cannot be changed. The creation of works has infinite possibilities, and can be dynamic, static, or even 3D. Each output will be different.

Art Blocks Team

Erick Calderon Founder

Calderon started out as a businessman, and through his interest in coding and art, he came up with the idea of creating an NFT platform. In the early days, Erick Calderon was also a pioneer in NFT. As early as when Cryptopunks was free minted, Erick Calderon already held multiple Cryptopunks NFTs. Later, when he created Art Blocks, Erick used CryptoPunks as

Rewards are given to his employees.

Erick has always been very interested in generative art, so he has created the most distinctive and cohesive community among many NFT projects by writing code and other means.

Jeff Davis Chief Creative Officer

Jeff Davis is the Chief Creative Officer of Art Blocks and co-founded Art Blocks with Erick Calderon. He also participated in the coding of Art Blocks.

Art Blocks is a platform rather than a single project

One of the most distinctive features of Art Blocks is that it does not end with the release of a single project. In Erick Calderon's eyes, Art Blocks is more like an aggregator for artists, leveraging its advantages through the technology and platform functions of Art Blocks to enable artists to sell in the NFT market.

Art Blocks Platform Features

Art Blocks 1.0: Curated vs Playground vs Factory

In the early days, Art Blocks differentiated artists' works through three different project distributions.

Art Blocks Curated

Art Blocks Curated is a collection of the world's top generative art, including projects such as Ringers, Fidenza and Chimera. In order to be selected for this series, artists need to load the script into the Art Blocks testnet in advance, and the generated samples will be evaluated by its curation committee.

Art Blocks’ curatorial committee comes from all walks of life, with different experiences and perspectives, but with a common goal: to find the most interesting and innovative generative art projects in the world and include them in Curated.

Art Blocks Playground

Once an artist is successfully selected for Curated, they can publish their work under the Playground series. Playground is used to encourage artists to express themselves freely and try different styles. Many good community experiences and works of Art Blocks come from Playground.

For example, Dmitri Cherniak, the creator of Ringers, released The Eternal Pump on Playground. The series of 50 works can resonate with almost everyone. At the same time, every collector who holds The Eternal Pump can get a Wrapture for free later - this practice turns The Eternal Pump from a piece of code into a wonderful art experience.

Art Block Factory

As Art Blocks became popular, the number of artists applying for Curated skyrocketed. Art Blocks created the Factory series, where artists can publish their works faster without waiting for the curatorial committee to review them.

Art Blocks 2.0

Artblocks said that starting from November, the previous Factory (a collection of non-curated works selected by Artblocks) and Playground (a collection of experimental works) will be merged into a new product called "Art Blocks Presents".

In addition, there will be Art Blocks Explorations, which is said to be a series to explore how generative casting can affect human experience. It can be expected that this series will have many new experiments, and the details have not yet been revealed.

New project categories after Art Blocks 2.0 revision:

  • Art Blocks Presents : Works approved by the Art Blocks team

  • Art Blocks Curated : Cutting-edge projects selected by the Art Blocks curatorial committee

  • Art Blocks Explorations: Experimental Exhibition

  • Art Blocks Collaborations: Partners such as Pace

Art Blocks Presents:

The previously included Factory and Playground will be presented in the subcategory "heritage" in Presents. There will be no more Factory and Playground works (the last batch will be released at the end of October), but artists can still apply to be listed on Artblocks in the original way.

The inclusion conditions are:

  • Selected by Artblocks, works that are considered worthy of being on the platform

  • Artblocks will be judged based on the same criteria as those used to promote generative art

  • The selected works will be released in Presents in early November, or the outstanding works will be put into the Curated Collection for release.

Art Blocks star projects:

On the initial sale on Art Blocks, artists receive 90% of the proceeds, with the remaining 10% going to Art Blocks.

Fidenza

999 pieces of the series were sold at 0.17 ETH. The sales of nearly 170 ETH generated 17 ETH of revenue for Art Blocks.

Compared to the copyright revenue traded on OpenSea, these revenues from the initial sale are almost negligible. On secondary markets like OpenSea, Art Blocks' works have soared from hundreds of dollars to tens of thousands or even millions of dollars. Through smart contracts, artists and Art Blocks can charge fees for each resale of each Fidenza. The usual fee structure is 2.5% of the transaction price for Art Blocks and 5% for the artist.

Fidenza Works:

Fidenza branch line QQL:

It is a side project created by Fidenza creator Tyler Hobbs and Dandelion Wist Mane

The project gives users the power to mint and create works.

By selling QQL Mint Pass, some users who own the pass can obtain the minting rights and sell them in the secondary market.

NFTs that are sold after the minting is completed:

in conclusion:

Art Blocks is not only a representative of an NFT blue chip project, it also expresses a sustainable NFT route. By aggregating aesthetic systems or technical skills, and accurately recognizing the needs of the NFT market, for NFT projects, platforms may be a hard requirement in the future.
