Typhoon Yagi has caused severe damage in the northern provinces of Vietnam. Heavy rains, flash floods, landslides and flooding have severely affected the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The most affected areas include 25 cities and provinces.

Statistics as of the morning of September 13, 2024 from the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) showed that Typhoon Yagi had killed and left missing 336 people, damaged more than 200,000 houses, collapsed bridges and destroyed many infrastructures.

The cities most severely affected include: Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Bac Giang, Quang Ninh, Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Yen Bai, Dien Bien, Son La, Hoa Binh, Bac Ninh, Ha Nam, Hanoi, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Hung Yen, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Thai Binh, and Vinh Phuc.

Specifically, Lao Cai is the locality with the highest number of deaths and missing people with 179 people, of which 98 people died and 81 people are missing. In Cao Bang, the number of deaths and missing people is 52, and Yen Bai recorded 50 people. Quang Ninh has 15 deaths and Hoa Binh and Tuyen Quang also suffered many serious losses.

In response to this emergency, Binance Charity has announced an airdrop of up to $1 million USD in BNB (Binance Coin) to support people in affected areas. Under the program, Binance users with proof of address (POA) in the 25 affected cities (above) will receive $50 USD in BNB directly into their accounts. The first round of support is expected to be delivered on September 16, 2024.

Additionally, for those who have not completed POA by September 10, Binance Charity will airdrop 20 USD BNB to those who complete POA between September 10 and 30, 2024.

POA (Proof of Address) is the process of verifying a user's residential address through the provision of valid supporting documents. Common documents used to verify POA include:

  • Utility bills such as electricity, water, internet, or gas.

  • Bank account statements for the past 3 to 6 months.

  • Certificate of residence issued by local government.

  • Lease or property ownership papers.

  • Driver's license or ID card with specific address.

Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, expressed his deepest sympathies: “We extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this devastating storm. We hope that our efforts can help alleviate some of the hardships the community is facing. We stand in solidarity with the community and wish them a speedy recovery from this disaster.”

Binance Charity has long been involved in charitable activities in Vietnam, including installing saltwater filtration systems and donating medical equipment to alleviate the hardships of people during previous difficult times.
