Record Crypto Fines: SEC Imposes $4.7 Billion in 2024
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) hit hard in 2024 with record fines of nearly $4.7 billion against cryptocurrency players, a jump of more than 3,000% from the previous year. This dramatic increase is largely due to a $4.47 billion settlement with Terraform Labs and its former CEO Do Kwon. This year’s fines, while fewer in number, have increased significantly in average amount, reaching more than $420 million per penalty. The SEC appears to be adopting a strategy focused on more influential enforcement actions to set precedents in the industry.
