II. Case Process

Getting to know the scammer: Ms. Sun met a strange man through a social platform, and the two gradually became familiar with each other and established a trusting relationship.

The man showed Ms. Sun his "success" in investing in virtual currencies and claimed to have inside information and high returns.

Investment bait: The man recommended a virtual currency investment platform to Ms. Sun and promised high returns.

In order to gain Ms. Sun's trust, the man also showed screenshots of his earnings and claimed that she could try the waters with a small investment first.

Small rebates to gain trust: Under the guidance of the man, Ms. Sun recharged 30,000 yuan to the platform for investment and successfully withdrew a small amount of profit.

Afterwards, the man further deceived Ms. Sun, claiming that he would help her advance 200,000 yuan to buy "U coins" on the platform to increase her investment confidence.

Offline money withdrawal fraud: The man introduced a so-called "U merchant" Li to Ms. Sun, claiming that Li could convert cash into "U coins" for investment.

After Ms. Sun withdrew 170,000 yuan in cash from the bank, she conducted an offline transaction with Li. However, after Li received the money, he did not recharge the "U Coin" into Ms. Sun's account.

Reporting to the police and arrest: After Ms. Sun realized that she had been cheated, she immediately reported to the Economic Development Branch of the Kunming Public Security Bureau.

The police officers from the Criminal Investigation Brigade of the Economic Development Bureau quickly launched a tracking operation and successfully identified Li and arrested him.

Thanks to the efforts of the police, Ms. Sun recovered 100,000 yuan in economic losses.

III. Case Analysis

Fraudulent methods: This case is a typical virtual currency investment fraud case of "online fraud + offline withdrawal". The fraudsters packaged themselves on social platforms to gain the trust of the victims, and then used high returns as bait to lure the victims into investing. After gaining the trust of the victims, they directly took the victims' cash through offline transactions.

Victim's psychology: Ms. Sun showed an adventurous mentality of "seeking wealth and fame through risk" and a blind pursuit of high investment returns in this case. This mentality is often easily exploited by scammers and leads to fraud traps.
