As Apple decides to open up the use of its iPhone NFC payment chip to third-party developers, Jeremy Allaire, CEO of stablecoin issuer Circle, also announced that USDC will soon launch contactless payment functions on the iPhone, which is expected to be optimized. Consumer payment experience.
Apple opens up NFC chip, opening door to payment providers
Apple announced yesterday that it will open its NFC (contact payment) chip, secure element (SE) and API in some regions for use by third-party application developers.
Bloomberg pointed out that the long-awaited opening was forced to launch under the pressure of the company being accused of monopoly by multiple regulatory agencies, including the European Union:
This will allow other developers to use its NFC chip to integrate multiple functions on Apple devices, including as consumer payments, public transportation tickets, identification cards, home and hotel keys, etc.
Of course, this will also introduce large-scale competition with the Apple Pay service, led by payment providers; therefore, Apple still requires developers to pay the "related fees" for using NFC chips and sign a commercial agreement.
It is reported that the above services are currently only provided to developers in Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, and do not include the European Union.
Circle: USDC will launch contactless payment function on iPhone
Soon, the encryption field also sensed payment business opportunities. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire tweeted about this, claiming that "the ability to click and pay via USDC on iPhone is coming."
Allaire explained in a follow-up tweet that this has nothing to do with Apple Pay, but rather that other Web3 wallets will be able to use NFC chips to conduct transactions:
If crypto wallets that support USDC successfully develop this feature on Apple devices, they will allow users to receive transaction information through sensors and simplify the payment process.
It added, "At this time, there will no longer be a need to manually enter the receiving address or payment amount. Users only need to confirm the payment with a password or FaceID after sensing, and they can trade and settle USDC through the blockchain."
He emphasized that the blockchain network with high performance and low fees will benefit from this and open up a broad path for Web3 payments:
Therefore, wallet developers should start using the latest iOS app development kits that support this feature and prepare for USDC contactless payments.
He also mentioned that Apple’s NFC chip can be used for more purposes, including NFT-based certificates or tickets, and even stable currency EURC.
Yesterday, wallet provider MetaMask announced that it would cooperate with Mastercard and payment provider Baanx to launch the world's first on-chain financial card test plan in the UK and EU.
(The first on-chain payment card, MetaMask Card, is now launched, and USDC, USDT and WETH can be paid!)
