NEAR uses a PoS consensus algorithm called threshold-proof-of-stake. By increasing the number of validators, more network participation is allowed. Third-party solutions, such as Metapool, are also built to curb large validator pools and further drive decentralization. NEAR’s block production technology is called “DoomSlug”.
DoomSlug allows NEAR to achieve so-called "actual finality" of transactions after only one round of communication between validators, rather than waiting for multiple blocks like Ethereum. Finality is a term that refers to when a blockchain transaction is effectively irreversible by the network, NEAR can continue to produce and finalize if half (50%) of the participants are online and no blocks prove to be invalid or incorrect.
