In a splashy announcement, the Bank of Russia has revealed that it plans to launch its own digital ruble on a large scale by the summer of 2025, provided pilot testing goes as planned. During a recent intervention before the Federation Council, Elvira Nabiullina, the governor of the Central Bank, clarified that the transition to this digital currency will take place gradually. The first tests were successful, but the final implementation will take some time.
This advance represents a major step in the digitalization of finances in Russia. The country launched a pilot project in August 2023, involving 12 banks and around 600 employees to test various features like digital wallet openings and fund transfers. Unlike other digital currencies, such as China's digital yuan, the digital ruble will be integrated in a complementary way to current forms of currency, without completely replacing them.
The aim is to offer a practical digital alternative, while giving citizens and businesses time to adapt. This ambitious project is part of a global trend where central bank digital currencies are becoming essential tools for modernizing financial systems.
