American Bank reports that more than seven million people were affected by a major hack and data breach that affected many financial services companies and their customers.
According to a new data breach notification filed with the Maine Attorney General's Office, a total of 7,640,112 Evolve Bank & Trust customers' sensitive data was exposed.
The data posted on the dark web reportedly includes customer names, social security numbers, bank account numbers, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses.
The hack, carried out by the notorious Russian-linked group LockBit, also affected several financial companies that did business with the bank.
Affirm, which has 18 million customers, believes the hack compromised the personal information of its Affirm card users.
In addition, Wise, Bilt, Marqeta, Mercury and EarnIn have either confirmed that some of their customer data was also stolen in the breach or announced further investigations.
Evolve Bank & Trust's system was hacked after an employee clicked on a malicious link in late May.
The bank says its customers should closely monitor their accounts for signs of suspicious activity and is offering two years of credit history and identity monitoring services to those affected by the issue.
Since the hack, several class action lawsuits have already been filed to find people whose personal data was or may have been affected.
Evolve has total assets of $1.551 billion and operates 26 locations throughout the United States.
