Atari combines blockchain technology to recreate classic games

Atari, a world-renowned game publisher, is combining some of its most famous classic games with blockchain technology, starting with the classic arcade game "Asteroids." Players can play on the Onchain Arcade and compete for the top three spots on global leaderboards to win weekly prizes, including a $1,000 Atari gift card.

The initiative is based on Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum second layer network, and Atari will move its classic games onto the chain and provide NFT access passes and score recording on the blockchain. Players will need to pay $5.25 (0.0015 $ETH) to mint an NFT access pass to start playing Asteroids. You can mint up to 1,000 Access Passes per wallet, but having more than one pass will not affect your game score.

Arcade competition on the chain and win generous prizes

While Asteroids is free to play on multiple sites, paying this small fee allows players to compete on weekly leaderboards, win prizes, and potentially participate in the growing gaming ecosystem and on-chain rewards . "All the scores are recorded on the chain, and it gets really fun from there," said Atari director Tyler Drewitz.

Each week, the top three players will receive a Steam game code for Asteroids: Recharged, $35 in merchandise credits, and an Atari 2600+ retro console. This is part of Base's ongoing "On-Chain Summer" event, where the top three players in the Asteroids event will each receive a $1,000 Atari gift card.

Drewitz further added: “Once you participate in it, it can grow and change — the level of prizes, what the next game is, and who has the high-score cartridge.” This hints at future plans for more on-chain arcade projects.

The long-term layout of the encryption industry

Atari has been working in the encryption industry for many years. As early as 2020, then-CEO Frédéric Chesnais stated that he "firmly believes in blockchain." These efforts include the issuance of Atari tokens, plans for on-chain video games and crypto casinos, and a VCS host that can be used as a verification node for blockchain transactions.

In addition, Atari has also partnered with blockchain gaming platform Enjin to launch virtual fashion NFTs and allow developers to use the Atari brand to create blockchain games through a licensing agreement. At the same time, the Atari experience will soon be established in The Sandbox, the Ethereum gaming metaverse.

Bringing "Asteroids" to the chain this time symbolizes another important step for Atari in the blockchain game industry. With the addition of more classic games in the future, this on-chain arcade project will undoubtedly attract more players, allowing them to relive their childhood memories while enjoying a new blockchain gaming experience.
