Alert for a new scam on Telegram: files with malware that impersonate videos

Cybersecurity experts have warned about the latest scam that is spreading through Telegram chats

With more than 950 million active users worldwide, Telegram is one of the most used instant messaging applications on the planet, second only to WhatsApp. It is not surprising, therefore, that the paper airplane messaging app is one of the main targets for hackers, who try to take advantage of less experienced users.

On this occasion, ESET cybersecurity specialist, Lukas Stefanko, has been the one who has warned of a new threat that is spreading through Telegram chats, and that seeks to infect the Android devices of users of the messaging app.

Malware impersonating videos

The threat, named by ESET experts as "EvilVideo", has been discovered in many conversations, groups and Telegram channels. It consists of a method that allows attackers to "camouflage" exploits so that, in chats, they appear as videos to avoid raising suspicion among victims.
