According to Cointelegraph, Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that he would resign on December 13 and hand over the position to current Deputy Attorney Edward Y. Kim. Williams has served in this position since 2021 and has been responsible for many cases involving cryptocurrency executives.
Williams was appointed by President Biden and is expected to be succeeded by former SEC Chairman Jay Clayton, who has represented companies such as Goldman Sachs and served as an advisor to Fireblocks. The prosecutors in the Southern District of New York are influential in cryptocurrency enforcement.
It is unclear how Clayton will handle cryptocurrency cases once he takes office. Scott Hartman of the office said the number of cryptocurrency enforcement cases may be reduced in the future.
