Crypto And Politics: Ethereum Founder Discusses Reality

Crypto activists support pro-crypto politicians, bringing crypto and politics together. Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's co-founder, has criticized this tendency as violating crypto industry ideals.

Crypto Is More Than Money

Vitalik said in his post that crypto is more than money and that the crypto community shouldn't support a politician who supports people's rights to own and spend tokens. He explained why crypto was founded to highlight that these politicians may not support the crypto industry's key ideas.

Vitalik said that cypherpunk “originally created crypto.” He called the movement a “much broader techno-libertarian ethos which argued for free and open technology as a way of protecting and enhancing individual freedoms generally.” The Ethereum co-founder said that Bitcoin made online payments easier, introducing money to crypto.

He said Bitcoin was used to pay artists outside copyright regulations. Vitalik stated that crypto is based on "freedom" and listed several key areas of crypto, including "freedom and privacy of communication," "freedom and privacy-friendly digital identity," "freedom and privacy of thought," and "high-quality access to information."

Vitalik stated that recent “pro-crypto” activities have concentrated on money, with US laws like the ‘Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act’ (FIT21) promoting cryptocurrency usage. Other crypto concerns have not been addressed.

Asking Correct Questions

Vitalik advised questioning if a politician is really “pro-crypto.” He advised crypto investors to assess if these politicians share their vision for 21st-century technology, politics, and the economy.

He also advised crypto community members to ask lawmakers whether they have a “good positive vision” beyond their short-term issues like demeaning other nations or tribes. Vitalik says you may help them if they believe this.
