Trump also announced on the same day that he had chosen Ohio Senator James David Vance as his running mate.

Mike Johnson, Republican speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, formally announced at the conference that day that he would nominate Trump and Vance as the Republican presidential and vice presidential candidates. Trump is expected to formally accept the nomination on the 18th.

Vance was born in 1984, was elected to the U.S. Senate from Ohio in 2022, and was sworn in in January 2023. He was once a fierce critic of Trump but has since become an ally of the former president.
