According to TechFlow, technology giants Microsoft and Apple have decided not to take board seats at artificial intelligence company OpenAI due to increasing regulatory scrutiny.

According to Bloomberg, Microsoft sent a letter to OpenAI on July 10 announcing its withdrawal from the board of directors. This is just one year after Microsoft invested $13 billion in OpenAI in April 2023.

Microsoft said the past eight months have seen significant progress with the new board, which is confident in the company's direction and therefore no longer believes its observer role is necessary.

Despite reports that Apple would get an observer role in June’s major deal, OpenAI said it would have no board observers following Microsoft’s departure.

OpenAI thanks Microsoft for their trust and looks forward to continued successful collaboration
