According to Odaily Planet Daily, people familiar with the matter said that OpenAI suffered a security breach in 2023, but did not disclose the incident to the outside of the company. OpenAI executives disclosed the incident internally at a meeting in April 2023, but did not disclose it publicly because the attacker did not access information about customers or partners.

Executives did not consider the incident to be a national security threat because they believed the attackers were individuals with no ties to foreign governments. They did not report the incident to the FBI or other law enforcement agencies.

The attackers reportedly accessed OpenAI’s internal messaging system and stole detailed information about the design of the company’s AI technology from employee conversations in online forums. They did not access the systems that OpenAI “houses and builds AI,” nor did they access the code.
