The new Swiss petition predicts that by June 30, 2026, Swiss Bitcoin $BTC supporters will have to collect 100,000 signatures to hold a referendum among Switzerland's 8.92 million residents.
According to Zanganeh, who helped launch the proposal alongside the founder and president of the Swiss non-profit think tank Bitcoin 2B4CH, and eight other Bitcoin supporters, the proposal needs to gather 100,000 signatures in order to be put to a public referendum.
The proposal that SNB should hold Bitcoin on its balance sheets was officially registered in the Swiss Federal Gazette on December 31.
Bitcoin is already widely adopted in the city Lugano (Canton Ticino) where according to BTCMaps data, in the city of Lugano which has 63,000 residents, around 260 merchants accept Bitcoin.
