Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter passed away peacefully on December 29, 2024, at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. He was 100 years old, making him the longest-lived president in U.S. history

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. His presidency was marked by significant achievements, including the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, and efforts in energy policy and human rights. After leaving office, he founded The Carter Center in 1982, dedicated to promoting peace and health worldwide. In recognition of his humanitarian efforts, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Carter is survived by his children—Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy—along with 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosalynn, who passed away on November 19, 2023.

Public observances in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., are being planned, followed by a private interment in Plains, Georgia. Details of the state funeral and related events will be released by the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region. The Carter family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Carter Center.
