Russia's Testing of Internet Restrictions
Russia is testing a new system designed to block VPN users from accessing the global internet. This development marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to create a 'sovereign internet,' with the system proving capable of restricting even virtual private networks. The government has already conducted trials of internet shutdowns in Dagestan, resulting in 24-hour disruptions that affected services like YouTube and Telegram. Russia plans to heavily invest in enhancing its web traffic censorship system, known as TSPU, which enables more sophisticated internet control. This move is part of a broader global trend towards stricter internet regulations. Russia’s strategy includes deep packet inspection, traffic rerouting, and targeting VPN services. While experts remain doubtful about its full success, Russia aims to isolate its internet in a manner similar to China and North Korea.
