Reddit said on Monday it is rolling out a new AI feature known as Reddit Answers to help people quickly find answers based on user posts.
The company revealed that Reddit Answers will be available on their homepage through a new button. The new link to the page will take users to the interface where they can ask AI questions, just as they do with ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other generative AI services. While the tool is accessible to a few, the company has indicated a desire to bring it to more languages and locations.
Reddit says this will enhance search experiences
Reddit’s AI-generated answers, unlike those of AI-powered chat and search tools, are sourced from posts made by users of the platform and not from around the web.
The company said a small portion of Reddit users in the US will have the privilege to access the Reddit Answers feature as part of an initial test before it is made public to all users by the company.
According to Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt, Reddit Answers can also pick up on things happening on Reddit within minutes.
Reddit’s vice president of product Serkan Piantino talking to CNBC, said Reddit has been testing the AI answers feature for almost six months now and is part of the company’s plans to better the platform and aid how people get answers.
The AI tool will answer with a bullet-point list of tips if say, a user asks AI Answers how to make modifications in a kitchen to a specific model. To access answers, a user can click the links in the answers and be redirected to related Reddit posts.
Piantino added, “Reddit Answers is more about building a bridge to the content than it is about being a replacement for it.”
“The company wants people to use the feature to access more Reddit content as opposed to merely reading AI-generated summaries.”
Piantino.
According to him, people will be able to use Reddit Answers to query any topic except those deemed NSFW, or not safe for work.
Search provides “focused” investment for Reddit
Earlier in October Reddit CEO Steve Huffman told analysts that, “search represents a focused investment for the company in 2025 due to its utility and how it helps new users find their home on Reddit.”
On the company’s third-quarter earnings call, he said this was an opportunity to register earnings from the AI feature.
“It helps core users navigate Reddit, answer their questions and it is a monetization opportunity.”
Huffman.
In the past 12 months, Reddit has become one of the most visited sites through Google, and this is because the company made changes internally. This was also helped by the fact that Google updated its algorithms to prioritize authentic content from online forums.
Hoffman in October also said, “Reddit is the sixth most searched word on Google in the US this year and so, those are people literally typing the word Reddit into Google. They know they are going to end up there. They are using in this case, Google to navigate Reddit.”
The company reported that after the adjustments, it has seen an increase in new users who are not logged into accounts on the platform.
The expectation is that with Reddit Answers, the number of users who will search for Reddit content on their platform will increase significantly and reduce reliance on Google for traffic. If it comes to suffice, the new users will create accounts that still want to use the feature. “Reddit Answers is only available in English for iOS and desktop users for now, but we plan to roll out the feature to Android users as well as in other languages in the future,” Piantino said.
