Researchers in China have reported initial results from an experimental surgical procedure they believe could help treat Alzheimer’s disease. The “cervical shunting” operation, which involves connecting lymphatic vessels in the neck to veins, aims to help clear harmful proteins from the brain. In a case study, the patient experienced cognitive improvements five weeks after surgery, as measured through standard tests.
However, the researchers have not yet claimed that this is a cure for Alzheimer’s, and more research is needed to determine the significance and durability of these changes.
