About Nervos Network (CKB)

The Nervos Network is a decentralized, privacy-focused network that operates differently from standard blockchains. While a usual blockchain system verifies all transactions and data through a process agreed upon by all its users, the Nervos Network operates by checking the state or condition of its system using a shared set of data rules. Essentially, it means that Nervos has a unique way of maintaining and verifying its data, emphasizing privacy and open participation without needing permission.

According to Nervos Network documentation, the network is a solution to the lack of scalability and interoperability in Layer 1 blockchain networks. Named after the human nervous system, the network shares a similar layered structure. There is a consensus generation layer, a separate layer used as an intelligent protector and another layer reportedly designed for high-performance operation and privacy protection.

On the other hand, the Layer-2 protocol handles transactions and creates a new state, such as application activity and other requests for additional data storage. The base layer of the network, the Nervos CKB core network, also provides a stateful "Turing-complete" virtual machine. Its role is to support the processing needs of applications using smart contracts. This VM system is based on Bitcoin's UTXO bookkeeping model to store and monitor state changes in the blockchain.

In addition, the Common Universal Knowledge Base model, Nervos CKB, provides interoperability as multiple Layer 2 blockchains can initiate and leverage the storage and processing power of the main network.

CKB is the native cryptocurrency of the Nervos Network. Holding CKB grants a user the right to a portion of the network's total storage capacity. For example, owning 1,000 CKB tokens allows a user to create storage cells totaling 1,000 bytes on the Nervos blockchain. This could be a single cell of 1,000 bytes or multiple cells that cumulatively add up to 1,000 bytes. The Nervos blockchain operates on a Proof of Work (PoW) system, and CKB is mined through an ASIC-resistant PoW algorithm. This mining approach is designed to evenly distribute tokens, enhancing the security of the network. CKB tokens are not only used to buy storage space on the Nervos blockchain but also add versatility to the ecosystem, enabling a range of applications and uses within the Nervos Network.

People Also Ask: Other Questions About Nervos Network

  1. What is CKB Used For?

CKB represents the storage space on the Nervos Network blockchain. One CKB is equal to one byte of storage (Cell). The Cell model is a generalized UTXO model which consumes storage cells to store data, state, and other consensus results on the CKB blockchain.

On-chain transfers, smart contract invocations, and other operations require miners' fees, which can be paid in CKBs. Furthermore, CKBs can be used as a Store of Value.

The CKB offering consists of two parts. The first part is called the "Base Issue" or "Tier 1 Issue". It is capped at $33.6 billion, all of which is mined, with the amount mined halving approximately every four years until it is exhausted. The second part is called the "Tier 2 Issue", and it is issued in increments of $1.344 billion annually.

  2. Who Is the Nervos Network Founder?

The Nervos Network was co-founded in 2018 by Terry Tai, Kevin Wang, and Daniel Lu. Tas was a core developer at Yunbi and Peatio cryptocurrency exchange. He is also the co-founder of Teahour.fm, one of China's most popular tech podcasts.

Wang co-founded the Launch School and has previously worked on enterprise data solutions at IBM Silicon Valley Lab as a consultant and engineer. Lu is a former CTO of imToken, former CTO of Yunbi, and co-founder of ruby-china.org.

CKB, the native cryptocurrency of the Nervos Network, was first launched in 2019. In March 2021, CKB price reached an all-time high of $0.04412.

  3. What is the Maximum Token Supply of CKB?

At the time of writing, the total supply of Nervos Network is 44,315,843,132 CKB, with a circulating supply of 43,622,916,635 CKB.

  4. What Makes Nervos Network Different From Others?

According to Nervos Network documentation, CKB's Cell Model makes the fee collection model flexible. Per the whitepaper, many public chains are unable to implement similar features due to technical limitations on the one hand and economic model limitations on the other.

Most public chains base the value of their native token on instantaneous transaction fees. Such an economic model risks losing support once more flexible fee models are allowed. Nervos' native CKB value is built on a global consensus state space. It is a long-term model that is not highly coupled with transaction fees and thus can reportedly implement a flexible fee model. This is one of the essential differences between CKB and other public chains.
