Time Is Running Out in the Hunt for Rare Bitcoin

A niche group of collectors is on the hunt for rare fragments of Bitcoin, which can be worth significantly more than their face value. Billy Restey, a digital artist based in Seattle, is among them, likening the pursuit to collecting rare trading cards like Magic: The Gathering or Pokémon.

Bitcoin is divided into 100 million satoshis (sats), and not all are created equal. Some, from the early days of Bitcoin or tied to significant transactions, are considered vintage and highly coveted. Restey and others employ various methods, including depositing and withdrawing Bitcoin batches from exchanges, to uncover these rare sats. While initially manual, Restey now uses automated software to sift through transactions, often selling valuable sats for around $80 each. #tinytick
