Tron Founder Consumes Famous Art Piece
Justin Sun, the founder of Tron (TRON), ate a banana that was part of the iconic art installation “Comedian” by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan during a public event in Hong Kong. The banana, purchased at a Sotheby’s auction for an astonishing $6.2 million, was consumed in front of a live audience.
Streaming the moment on the X platform, Sun removed the banana from the wall, where it was attached with duct tape, peeled it, and took a bite. After the first bite, he briefly addressed the audience in Mandarin, saying he would save the rest "for later."
A Plan to Distribute 100,000 Bananas
Following the incident, Sun announced his intention to purchase 100,000 bananas from a fruit vendor on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, who originally sold the banana used in the artwork for just 25 cents. Sun plans to distribute these bananas worldwide.
“Mr. Shah Alam, the owner of a fruit stall on the Upper East Side, unknowingly became a key contributor to a groundbreaking piece of art that has gained profound cultural significance,” Sun stated in his post.
The History of the Banana as Art
The banana at the center of this story is part of the renowned art installation “Comedian”, where a banana is taped to a wall with duct tape. Justin Sun acquired this artwork at a Sotheby’s auction after six minutes of bidding.
Upon purchase, the auction house provided Sun with a certificate of authenticity, along with a “starter kit” that included a fresh banana, duct tape, and detailed instructions on how the piece should be displayed.
Sun’s Role in Artistic History
Justin Sun described eating the banana as part of a unique artistic experience to honor the artwork and its cultural significance. By doing so, he joined the ranks of two other individuals who had previously eaten Cattelan’s banana: a South Korean student and New York artist David Datuna.
