Deutsche Telekom’s subsidiary, MMS, in cooperation with Bankhaus Metzler, launched a pilot project to run a Bitcoin mining infrastructure using excess energy. The goal is to provide real usage data and insights for planning future projects. This move comes as the use of renewable energy sources increases, generating more surplus energy than can be consumed or stored.

Bitcoin mining can stabilize the energy network during these fluctuations. The pilot project, operated by Metis Solutions GmbH, aims to contribute to the stabilization of the energy network and potentially benefit wind energy producers and operators of photovoltaic power plants. Deutsche Telekom has been involved in similar projects since 2020 by providing infrastructure for various decentralized protocols in the Web3 sector and operating a Bitcoin node since 2023.
