Sui Developers Explore 'Internet-Free Transactions' for Crypto Payments
One of the significant concerns surrounding crypto payments is what happens if the internet goes downâhow will users access their wallets, and how will data stay in sync? This issue is especially relevant in regions with frequent power outages or limited internet access.
However, this challenge may soon be addressed as Suiâs
blockchain, developed by "Mysten Lab, is pioneering a solution called âInternet-free transactions.â This innovative approach aims to ensure cryptocurrencies can continue flowing even when internet access is unavailable.
Enabling Offline Transactions
Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder of Mysten Labs, has outlined how Suiâs technology could enable users to exchange cryptocurrencies without internet access. The idea is to leverage alternative communication methods, such as mobile networks or even radio waves, to transmit cryptographic data when the internet is unavailable.
The Sui team has already conducted research and successfully transmitted transactions using underwater waves, long-distance radio signals, and by compressing transactions small enough to be sent via SMS. According to Abiodun, âWe can effectively transmit transactions using multiple communication channels without relying on the internet. This is especially critical for disaster recovery, power outages, or in areas with limited connectivity.â
A Game-Changer for Offline Payments
Abiodun believes that "internet-free transactions" could be a breakthrough for the crypto space, especially for one-way payments where instantaneous internet connections aren't always necessary.
After successful testing, the next step is to integrate the method with IoT devices, potentially revolutionizing decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN) projects. This advancement could greatly improve cryptocurrency usability in areas with limited internet access, setting a new standard for offline transactions in the digital economy.
