  • Sky Mavis introduces Ronin zkEVM, a scalable blockchain for gaming with zero-knowledge technology, which was developed in partnership with Polygon.

  • Layer 2 Ronin zkEVM aims to expand game accessibility and economic efficiency by leveraging Polygon's advanced tech stack.

Sky Mavis, the blockchain gaming platform behind Ronin, has announced its latest innovation with the upcoming launch of Ronin zkEVM, a Layer 2 chain based on zero-knowledge (ZK) Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) technology.

Layer 2 Ronin zkEVM: Scaling Blockchain Gaming

Layer 2 Ronin zkEVM, built using Polygon's Chain Development Kit (CDK), marks a significant expansion beyond its initial application in the popular play-to-earn game Axie Infinity.

Layer 2 Ronin zkEVM aims to address scalability challenges by leveraging zero-knowledge proofs, enabling more games and players to participate while ensuring economic efficiency. By integrating a dedicated Polygon ZK verifier, Ronin offers game studios the opportunity to build their own zkEVM blockchains without the need to establish separate security and consensus protocols.

The move is driven by Sky Mavis' vision to create a unified gaming ecosystem that supports seamless asset transfers and token swaps across different layers. Trung Nguyen, CEO and Co-founder of Sky Mavis, emphasized the strategic importance of Layer 2 Ronin zkEVM in accommodating billions of gamers and positioning itself as a pivotal platform in the Web3 gaming space.

"While Ronin has comfortably supported our existing games with low gas costs, our exponential growth means we need to stay 5 steps ahead when it comes to scalability. Certain games, such as fully-onchain-games, have specific needs and may even want to put a majority of game actions onchain. In the past, it’s been difficult for us to work with these types of games as we were wary of games that could potentially clog up Ronin with transactions," said Nguyen.

Ronin's Role in Web3 Gaming

Already boasting 1.4 million daily active addresses according to Ronin blockchain explorer data, the network has successfully integrated major blockchain games like Pixels, which has seen its user base surge to 4.4 million since migrating to Ronin in 2023.

In addition to facilitating scalability, the partnership with Polygon underscores Sky Mavis' commitment to fostering a robust gaming ecosystem. Nguyen highlighted the potential for game developers to launch their own L2 solutions on Ronin, provided they meet specific validator requirements.

Moving forward, Sky Mavis plans to integrate Polygon's ZK prover directly into Ronin, further streamlining the process for developers to deploy zkEVMs and bolstering the network's capabilities as a preferred choice for blockchain gaming innovation.
