Judicial Proceedings and Sentencing Details

Initially, prosecutors sought a three-year sentence, while the defense team from Latham & Watkins argued for five months probation. The sentencing guidelines recommended a period of 12 to 18 months. In the end, U.S. District Judge Richard Jones imposed a considerably reduced sentence of four months.

Before receiving his sentence, Zhao stood in court to express his regret and accept full responsibility for the lapse. “I’m sorry,” Zhao said, according to Reuters. He said,

“The first step in accepting responsibility is openly recognizing your faults. I should have created an effective anti-money laundering program… I now see the gravity of this error.”

Moreover, this revelation was a landmark point in the case, demonstrating Zhao’s recognition of the seriousness of his acts and the consequences.

Comparisons to Sam Bankman-Fried’s Case

Zhao’s prison term has drawn comparisons to another high-profile case in the cryptocurrency world involving Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder and former CEO of FTX. Bankman-Fried is currently serving a much lengthier sentence of 25 years in a federal prison.

Bankman-Fried’s downfall was precipitated by the collapse of his cryptocurrency exchange and the associated hedge fund, Alameda Research, after being convicted on seven felony charges of securities fraud conspiracy. In addition to his prison sentence, Bankman-Fried was forced to pay $11 billion in forfeiture, a considerable financial hit given the scope of the scam.
