US Will Extradite Do Kwon

Montenegro's Minister of Justice, Bojan Božović, has ordered the extradition of Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon to the United States, ending a lengthy legal process. The Montenegrin daily Vijesti reported the decision on Friday, ending months of legal battles between the US and Korea to put the controversial entrepreneur to trial.


The Supreme Court of Montenegro had previously ruled that Do Kwon's extradition was legitimate after receiving petitions from the Republic of Korea and the US. The verdict allowed Minister Božović to assess the circumstances and determine the prevailing jurisdiction.

The Department of Justice told Vijesti that it had considered all the facts and circumstances and assessed criteria such as the gravity of the crimes, the place of commission, the order in which the request was submitted, the nationality of the requested person, the possibility of further extradition to another country, and other factors in light of the Supreme Court's ruling.

Given the above, it was concluded that most of the criteria provided for by law support the extradition request of the competent authorities of the United States of America, and the Minister of Justice has issued a decision allowing Kwon Do Hyeong's extradition to the US while refusing to the Republic of Korea.

Do Kwon was investigated by US and South Korean authorities for his participation in a major crypto failure. TerraUSD and Luna, Kwon's coins, plummeted in May 2022.

Investigators believe Do Kwon deceived investors and hid TerraUSD/Luna crash-related money. Last March 23, police arrested crypto entrepreneur Han Chang-joon and Terraform Labs' former finance officer at Podgorica airport for traveling to Dubai with false passports. After Do Kwon got a four-month term in Montenegro, US and South Korean authorities increased extradition petitions.

On March 23, Montenegrin officials sent Do Kwon to an immigration inspector after his release from Spuž Prison.
