New York Seeks Blockchain Analyst to Combat Crypto Crime

New York’s financial regulator is on the lookout for a senior blockchain analytics analyst to help address financial crimes, particularly money laundering, within the cryptocurrency sector.

The position can be based in either New York City or Albany, with a starting salary of $84,156. Successful candidates can expect potential salary increases reaching up to $106,454. For those based in the New York City metro area—including Suffolk, Nassau, Rockland, and Westchester counties—a $3,400 annual downstate adjustment will also be provided.

Role Focused on Assessing Illicit Activity and AML Compliance

Applicants must have a minimum of one year of experience in the cryptocurrency industry, specifically in blockchain analytics and utilizing Open-Source Intelligence tools. A thorough understanding of the Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering (AML) regulations is essential.

The new analyst will be responsible for evaluating risks related to illicit activities using blockchain analytics and on-chain attribution linked to DFS-regulated virtual currency licensees. Additionally, the analyst will monitor dashboards for any irregularities that may indicate money laundering or sanctions violations, requiring further investigation and reporting.

Addressing Oversight Gaps in BitLicense Regulation

In January 2015, the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) established a virtual currency unit to enforce the BitLicense framework, which governs businesses dealing with virtual currencies. This unit is tasked with investigating various violations, including fraud, unauthorized operations, inadequate cybersecurity, and non-compliance with AML standards.

Earlier this year, New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli raised concerns regarding potential gaps in oversight within the BitLicense program. A report from his office recommended improvements to enhance the financial sustainability and cybersecurity measures associated with the program.
