China's trade data is weak, and the USD fixing rate against the RMB is weaker than expected😐

Yesterday's markets began with a distinctly risk-off tone on weak China trade data (exports -14.5%, imports -12.4%, exports to US fell 23% YoY), just a day after the country's foreign direct investments fell to the lowest levels in 25 years. Shortly after, embattled developer Country Garden announced that they have not paid two dollar bond coupons totaling $22.5 million, triggering 30-day grace periods and leading to renewed concerns about the China recovery trade.

Traders rushed to hedge downside risks on Chinese exposures, while USD-CNY FX options were the most active traded pairs (>$18bln) in global FX yesterday based on DTCC/Bloomberg data as the official USD/CNY fix came in much weaker than expected at above 7.15.

Important Economic Data to be Released Soon, Market Trends Stable🙃

Outside of China, markets were quiet with the UK out on Bank Holidays on Monday, with US markets following suit next Monday on Labour Day. Markets saw markets holding their continuation patterns after Jackson Hole, with US equities rallying 0.5-1%, and bond yields softening about 3bp across the curve as the double header of 2yr and 5yr auctions came in as market expected.

Despite a number of top-tier data releases on the horizon, namely with JOLTS / PCE / ISM / NFP, Friday's 10y future straddle is coming in on the soft-side at just over 54 ticks vs a 68 tick average for this year's NFP weeks (source: Citi), signaling a lot of comfort over the rate market's current pricing (20% chance for a Fed hike). Furthermore, the 2yr bond at over a 5% coupon is the first time that has happened since 2006, no doubt drawing some initial buying interests and it's been a long time since savings accounts have seen these yields.

The Fed is caught in a dilemma, and US bonds experience a relief rebound🗣️

While the NFP number was contentious enough to keep the 'data-dependent' Fed in limbo (YE hiking odds remain <20% on Friday's close), and treasuries finally saw a relief rally with 10y yields lower by -11bp on the session, it wasn't enough to rescue a challenging week for markets, with treasuries seeingly the highly weekly move since Feb, the SPX having the worst week since March, and commodities seeing the worst since June despite a 10%+ rally in oil.

Global economic weakness reverses interest rate trends👀

With short-positioning extremely crowded in bonds, the soft global survey data was enough to temporarily crack the higher-for-longer facade, with 2/10s bull flattening by ~6bp and yields about 10-13bp lower across the curve. On the other hand, the 10am BLS Payroll revision of -306k (vs -500k expectation) gave a temporary pause to the bond rally with the labour market still looking solid, though eventually the short-squeeze continued with the bond rally squeezing all the way into and out of the 20yr treasury auction. Technical indicators are pointing to a further bullish retracement of bond prices back to the early August lows, with perhaps Powell's Jackson-Hole speech providing a possible trigger.

Nvidia's financial report exceeds expectations, stock market returns to an upward trend📢

After a couple weeks of selling pressures, equities were obviously happy to be obliged with the risk-on move, with S&P rallying over 1% led by gains in tech and real estate names. The former was already rallying well ahead of the Nvidia earnings, which blew past even the lofty estimates in the afterhours, and helping to extend the index gains by another 0.8% as of the time of writing.

Nvidia's results came in well above estimates, thanks to an exceptionally strong performance out of its emerging data center business, with management still presenting a rosy outlook for AI-led chip demand going forward. Shares are up 7% in the after-hours, with the stock joining the hallowed ranks of Apple and Amazon as being one of the most important bellewether names in the entire SPX universe.

Technically speaking, the SPX appears to have made a successful break above its August downward channel, suggesting a further move in the risk-on move along with the on-going squeeze in bond prices. Markets will be focused on Chairman Powell's speech tomorrow morning, and in particular on how aggressive he is in verbally jousting terminal rates higher.
