Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Announces New Features And Updates To “Purge”

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, recently went on X to explain the next steps in the Purge, the ongoing attempt to simplify the protocol.
One goal of this project is to lessen the burden on the Ethereum protocol’s storage capacity for historical data. As a result, the protocol’s technical debt will decrease dramatically and the load on node operators’ hard drives will decrease as well.
“The Purge” is an initiative to streamline Ethereum and resolve the many technical problems that have built up over time. In his statement, Buterin refers to the possibility of further Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) with a similar focus on streamlining the platform.
While discussing the Dencun hard split, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin brought attention to the deployment of Ethereum Improvement Protocol (EIP)-6780. This protocol modification greatly reduced the functionality of the “SELFDESTRUCT” code and improved security measures, leading to a far simpler Ethereum ecosystem.
A major modification after EIP-6780 is the inclusion of a restriction on the maximum number of storage slots that may be modified in one block. This limit is approximately calculated by dividing the gas limit by 5000. The removal of the SELFDESTRUCT function will greatly improve the network’s security and efficiency, according to Buterin, who is optimistic about future EIPs.
After the switch from Proof-of-Work (PoW) to Proof-of-Stake (PoS), or “The Purge,” as Buterin called it, there will be extensive cleaning within the Geth Ethereum client to remove unnecessary code. Efficient code management of empty accounts is one area that has benefited from recent Ethereum Improvement Proposals.
