Among the latest news on Artificial Intelligence (AI), the launch of the new Huawei Mate XT smartphone and the new large language model SEA-LION by Sony stand out.

AI News: Huawei Mate XT surpasses the expectations of the new iPhone 16 by Apple

Hours after Apple presented its iPhone 16, Huawei surprised its fans with the release of the new Mate XT Ultimate Design.

This is the first AI tri-fold smartphone in the world with three large glass screens, foldable to the point that when folded it appears to have only one screen.

In addition to the various unique design features, the new Huawei smartphone is equipped with a new update of the internal operating system HarmonyOS and includes specific AI functions.

In fact, the new Mate XT Ultimate Design offers a voice editing function that helps to perfect the voice transcription of the text and a translation expert that allows switching from one language to another in texts.

Not only, AI also supports photo editing, which can extend the background of an image or remove objects from photos when the user desires.

The triply foldable smartphone is available for pre-orders and will be launched on the market on September 20, 2024.

The announcement from Huawei has exceeded expectations, especially after Apple presented the iPhone 16 series, its first line of smartphones equipped with artificial intelligence, which however  are still in beta testing.

AI News: the large language model SEA-LION by Sony Research and AI Singapore

Staying on the topic of AI, Sony Research and AI Singapore (AISG) announced their partnership to launch their SEA-LION model (Southeast Asian Languages In One Network).

In practice, it is an AI-based model that aims to improve upon previous ones in processing the languages of the region. A mission not too simple if you consider that it is the South-East Asia, which hosts over a thousand different languages.

In this regard, Hiroaki Kitano, President of Sony Research commented:

“As a global company, diversity and localization are vital forces. In Southeast Asia, in particular, the citizens of the region speak more than a thousand different languages. This linguistic diversity underscores the importance of ensuring that AI models and tools are designed to support the needs of all the world’s populations. [..] Access to master’s degree courses that address the global landscape of language and culture has been an obstacle to the research and development of new representative and fair technologies for the global populations we serve”

Artificial Intelligence conquers the Argentine government

Recently, in Argentina, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Unit Applied to Security (UIAAS) has been established to combat cybercrime.

This is a decision made by President Javier Milei, which will offer the opportunity to leverage AI at the governmental level such as machine learning algorithms to analyze data and combat and predict crimes.

From what has emerged, however, while the government is trying to replicate AI standards already used by other countries in the world and defined as efficient, there are those who criticize this choice.

For example, several human rights organizations have started to judge this choice of the Argentine government as a move to limit freedom of expression and to promote self-censorship.
