BitcoinOS just pulled off a crypto first: they verified the first-ever zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) directly on Bitcoin’s mainnet, a technical milestone that could unlock a slew of scaling and functionality on Bitcoin.
This breakthrough, confirmed in block 853626, ushers in a new era of scalability and functionality for the Bitcoin blockchain, traditionally limited by the need for soft forks to implement upgrades.

In a nutshell, ZKP would allow enhancements to the network without requiring changes to its core consensus code. This advancement positions Bitcoin as a more competitive alternative to newer blockchain technologies like Solana, potentially matching or surpassing their functionality.
Edan Yago, a core contributor to BitcoinOS, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating:
“This is the first time Bitcoin has been upgraded without a soft fork, reducing or possibly eliminating the reliance on formal proposals to introduce features such as covenants to Bitcoin.”
To further capitalize on this breakthrough, BitcoinOS has announced plans to release the first ZK Proof Ordinal and is actively developing a dedicated blockchain explorer for analyzing ZK transactions on Bitcoin, enhancing transparency and insight into this emerging technology.
