Layer-2 protocols are similar to “cultural extensions of the Ethereum” network, as Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin emphasized in a recent blog post.

The co-founder of Ethereum began the blog post by explaining the basics of Layer-2 protocols and how they vary from Layer-1 protocols. Buterin thinks that, rather than technological differences, the key distinction between the two developments is organizational.

The crypto entrepreneur also said that, “it’s not about what can get built, but what will get built,” referring to the impact on people’s motivations and actions caused by the blurring of boundaries between various ecosystem components.

Inherently Pluralistic

According to his description, Layer 2-centric ecosystems are inherently pluralistic. Not to mention that they have the inherent ability to encourage a proliferation of various methods for scaling, designing virtual machines, and other technical traits.

Buterin referred back to an earlier comment in which he made it plain that Ethereum serves as a hub around which developers may autonomously construct a sub-ecosystem. According to the remark made public by the co-founder of Ethereum, the sub-ecosystem might have its own unique characteristics while still relying on Ethereum. This categorization, he said, includes culture in addition to technology.

The well-known researcher Paul Dylan-Ennis has devoted considerable effort to studying Ethereum subcultures, as stated by Buterin. Cyherpunk, Regens, and Degens are the three primary Ethereum subcultures that Dylan-Ennis has identified so far.

The traits of each of the three subcultures are distinct. But Ethereum’s status as a versatile platform for developers gives them a chance to compete “where the subculture can engage in action and not just talking.”
