US presidential candidate Donald Trump said he would release the founder of the Silk Road darknet site Ross Ulbricht if he wins the election.
The politician announced his readiness to pardon the man, whom the court recognized as one of the creators of the platform, during a speech at the National Libertarian Convention, held in Washington. Trump believes Ulbricht has spent enough time in prison.
"If you vote for me, on day one I will commute Ross Ulbricht's sentence to time served. He's already served 11 years, we'll bring him home," the US presidential candidate said.
The Silk Road founder was arrested on October 2, 2013, accused of involvement in money laundering, drug trafficking and cybercrime. The court found Ulbricht guilty and imposed a sentence of two life sentences plus 40 years on top.
Hours before his convention speech, Trump also expressed his support for the crypto industry on Truth Social. According to the politician, he is very positive about the field of digital assets and companies working in this direction.
