When Elon Musk shifted X's content management to an artificial intelligence approach, X's AI chatbot, Grok, failed miserably, breaking news of an Iranian attack on Tel Aviv.
This raised concerns about the reliability of the #AI content and its authenticity, leading to false accusations.
This unfortunate incident speaks to the importance of human involvement and oversight to prevent potential disasters.
The horrifying news caused a social media storm when #Elon Musk's Platform X posted news of an Iranian attack on Israel on the front page of its Explorer news feed.
On Thursday, one of the headlines on X's main news feed read.
"Iran attacks Tel Aviv with heavy missiles.
This would be a rather alarming update given the geopolitical scenario and the fact that Israel's invasion of Gaza has not only further heightened tensions between the two countries, but that Israel attacked the Iranian embassy in Syria, killing a senior official. So while this may not be the best of times, it is perfect for those who want to promote misleading headlines for any reason, and the role of AI (artificial intelligence) cannot be ignored as it can be used as a tool for such heinous acts.
The headline was fake and more disturbingly, generated by X's Grok's official artificial intelligence chatbot and posted on the front page of X's Explore trending news on the day the feature was upgraded to the new version.
If you go back to the origins of this incident, it's clear that the misleading headlines created by Grok are the result of putting the important job of content curation, which used to be done by humans, into the hands of artificial intelligence that doesn't yet have full intelligence.
But that all changed when Musk acquired Twitter in 2022, renamed the company X, and replaced human-written context with trending news. The entire human editorial team was fired in favor of artificial intelligence that curated news more efficiently, which had its drawbacks, though.
