Kenya has yet again emerged as the leading expatriate destination among African countries in a new survey carried out by InterNations.

According to the survey:

  • Kenya ranked 14th globally as a favorite expatriate location, ahead of countries such as China, France, and the United Kingdom

  • South Africa was the 2nd African country from the survey at 29th globally while

  • Egypt was 41st globally

The survey received responses from over 12,500 expatriates from 175 nationalities living in 174 countries with the results included in ‘The Best and Worst Countries for Living Abroad’ report.

The target audience included all kinds of expats, from international retirees and self-made expats who looked for work abroad to foreign assignees (i.e., employees sent on a corporate assignment abroad), and others who moved for a variety of reasons.

The results are further broken down into five topical indices:

  • Quality of Life

  • Ease of Settling In

  • Working Abroad

  • Personal Finance, and

  • Expat Essentials

According to the report, expats rank Kenya highly in the:

  • Ease of Settling In Index (9th)

  • For their friendliness (ranked 11th) and

  • Find it relatively simple to form meaningful relationships and friendships (ranked 7th)

In expat essentials, expats have few issues with:

  • Language in Kenya, ranking 5th in this regard

  • The country ranks 13th worldwide for housing affordability, with 75% of expats stating that finding accommodation is relatively easy, compared to the global average of 45%

  • Kenya ranks 3rd globally for its climate and weather, and

  • 11th for its natural environment, with 91% of expats expressing appreciation for these aspects

That said, expats in Kenya encounter serious challenges, especially regarding infrastructure and safety.

  • The country ranks poorly in the Travel & Transit (51st) and

  • Safety & Security (51st) categories.

Many expats voice concerns about political stability and corruption, particularly within the police force. In the survey 24% of expatriates gave negative ratings for personal safety, significantly higher than the global average of 8%.
