Many people on Reddit have shared their stories of terrifying experiences after waking up during surgery. An operation can be a stressful experience in itself, but fortunately in most cases it is done under anesthesia, so people do not remember the details of the procedure. However, in rare cases, patients wake up during surgery and witness what the medical team is doing.

A nightmare at the dentist

The first story was shared about an unfortunate dental procedure experience that made many forum members laugh. “I was under anesthesia during my wisdom tooth surgery. All of a sudden I woke up and the dentist said, ‘Shit, he woke up.’ I pointed to the IV bag and everyone started laughing and someone said, ‘He wants more.’ They put me back to sleep” the user wrote.

Tacos in the operating room?

Another user said he had two hand surgeries in 2023 that he was awake for: “During both of my hand surgeries, I was awake in 2023. One time, I watched them quietly while the doctors talked about a lunch break and wanting tacos.” The story took a humorous turn when the patient said: “I asked if they’d tried this instead of tacos, and one of the assistants exclaimed, ‘Damn, I forgot you were awake!'”

“Damn, I’m awake!”

Here’s another case of wisdom tooth removal, which is definitely not the best surgery to experience while awake. The story goes like this: “I woke up while my wisdom teeth were being removed. I felt them chipping my teeth; they said i have very crooked roots so the surgery took longer than expected. I didn’t feel any pain, but I remember thinking, ‘Damn, I’m awake.'”

Anesthesia doesn’t work

One Reddit-user reported that anesthesia never works properly for him, so he remained awake during several surgeries: “This happens with all my surgeries. The anesthesia doesn’t work for me for some reason. I have had four surgeries so far. The most memorable experience was my first surgery. I fell asleep, and then I heard someone scream, an agonizing scream full of real fear of death. I wanted to get up and help, and then suddenly I felt pain – they were cutting tissue to remove bone fragments – and I realized that I was the one screaming.”
