Former NFL player Russell Okung has launched a new flag football league called Bitball, where players will be paid exclusively in Bitcoin. The league will debut on December 10 with a game featuring 24 professional football players in Abu Dhabi. Okung made the announcement on X, outlining his vision for a sports league that eliminates traditional financial intermediaries and provides players with direct Bitcoin payments.
Okung’s own Bitcoin salary from 2020, which he has not sold, is now worth around $21 million. Bitball aims to offer fan participation as well, with plans to allow fans to own stakes in the organization. This move comes as Bitcoin has reached new all-time highs and as cryptocurrency continues to intersect with sports.
