This Japanese Trader Turned $13K into $153 Million From His Bedroom
Takashi Kotegawa, renowned as Japan’s legendary “bedroom” trader, is one of the country's most notable day traders who amassed significant wealth trading stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in the early 2000s. Remarkably, he managed to grow a modest account of around $13,600 into an impressive $153 million in just about eight years, with some trades earning him millions.
Known by his chatroom alias “BNF” and often referred to as “J-Com man,” Kotegawa was born on March 5, 1978, in Ichikawa, Chiba, Japan. He began trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange during the bear market of 2001. Despite his multi-millionaire status and widespread recognition as a top day trader in Japan, Kotegawa is considered a humble individual who avoids extravagant purchases, such as luxury cars or lavish meals.
One notable exception was when he splurged on a top-floor apartment, which he purchased for an astonishing 400 million yen.
In 2005, Kotegawa made millions through a single trade involving J-Com Holdings following its IPO on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. This opportunity arose due to a mistake by a trader at Mizuho Securities, who accidentally sold 610,000 shares at one yen each instead of selling one share at 610,000 yen. This massive sell order caused the stock price to plummet, presenting Kotegawa with a golden opportunity.
He purchased 7,100 shares while the price was depressed, selling part of his position during the recovery and holding onto some shares overnight. Reportedly, Kotegawa earned more than $17 million from that trade alone.
